Ammunition Age and Shipping Rules
We follow federal, state, and local laws for ammunition sales. Our website uses an age gate because some products are restricted by age and location. Final eligibility depends on the product and the state where the order is shipping.
Age Requirements
Handgun ammunition is sold only to customers 21 or older. Rifle and shotgun ammunition are sold only to customers 18 or older, unless state law sets a higher age. We may ask for ID or other documents before we ship. If we cannot verify your age or required documents, we will cancel the order and issue a refund.
States Where We Do Not Ship Ammunition Directly to a Customer Address
California — California law requires ammunition sales to go through a licensed California ammunition vendor, with a state background check at the point of sale. Online orders must ship to an FFL or licensed ammunition vendor, not to a residential address. This area of law is currently the subject of active federal litigation, and the rules could change. We will update this page if they do.
Massachusetts — Massachusetts law requires in-person presentation of a valid Firearms Identification Card (FID), License to Carry (LTC), or other qualifying license for ammunition purchases. Because online sellers cannot satisfy this in-person requirement, we do not ship ammunition directly to Massachusetts addresses.
New York — New York law requires ammunition sales to be conducted in person through a licensed dealer or registered seller, with a background check. We do not ship ammunition directly to New York customer addresses. Orders may be sent to a valid FFL or registered ammunition seller in New York.
Washington, D.C. — D.C. law requires a valid firearms registration certificate to possess ammunition, and ammunition sales are restricted to licensed dealers within the District. We do not ship ammunition to Washington, D.C.
Alaska and Hawaii — While Alaska and Hawaii do not broadly prohibit ammunition purchases, major shipping carriers restrict or prohibit ground ammunition shipments to and within these states due to hazmat regulations. Because ammunition cannot be shipped by air and carrier ground service is limited or unavailable, we are unable to ship ammunition to Alaska or Hawaii at this time.
States Where Extra Documents Are Required Before We Ship
Connecticut — Connecticut requires a valid ammunition certificate, permit to carry pistols or revolvers, or long gun eligibility certificate, plus a state-issued ID. We will hold your order until we receive and verify the required documents.
Illinois — Illinois requires a valid FOID (Firearm Owner’s Identification) card and a matching state-issued ID to receive ammunition. The shipping address must match an address on one of those documents. Note: We do not ship ammunition to the City of Chicago.
New Jersey — New Jersey requires a valid firearms purchaser identification card, permit to purchase or carry a handgun, or equivalent document, plus a government-issued photo ID. We will hold your order until we receive and verify the required documents.
Rhode Island — Rhode Island requires ammunition buyers to be 21 or older and to hold a valid pistol/revolver safety certificate or a Rhode Island hunter education course card. We may require a copy of qualifying documentation before shipping.
Local Restrictions
Some cities, counties, and municipalities have their own ammunition restrictions beyond state law. Examples include but are not limited to the City of Chicago (IL), Annapolis (MD), and certain California cities. If you live in an area with local restrictions, please confirm your eligibility before ordering.
Carrier and Shipping Limitations
Ammunition is classified as a hazardous material and must ship by ground service through authorized carriers. It cannot be shipped by air, through the U.S. Postal Service, or to P.O. boxes, APO/FPO addresses, or international destinations. Carrier policies may impose additional restrictions on certain destinations.
